Old Major went on with his prolonged preaching and I listened and stared in awe. However I never imaged the blow that would knock us all off our humble feet. Death. He announced the soon arrival of his death. A grave would have to be dug, eulogies written, but I could not listen, not anymore. This great pig who had lead us to this new adventure. Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes, for I was quite the emotional pig, unable to bear this sorrowful news. He went on with his great lecture closing his thesis with a song. A song? I know, what song could there be that would relate to our humble situation. We stand corrected, you and I. For the song he introduced was Beasts of England. That's what I was, wasn't I? Yes I was a beast, we were all beasts and determined was I to lead that message to all animal kind, and even the wretched Jones...
the dream
It had spread like an epidemic, the news of Old Major’s dream. All the animals of the farm buzzed with anxiety. What could the noble pig have to say that would reduce our sleep by an hour? I trod in first sitting at the front. Once everyone filed in and adjusted themselves Old Major cleared his throat authoritatively. Can you imagine the palpable thickness of the curiosity and anxiety of the animals? I looked around noticing one absence, Moses. Where could the enigmatic ball of plumage have gone? I did not have anything against the quiet bird, or anyone on the farm for that matter. However it was a rather important occasion and I was certain the news of the meeting had reached his ears, in fact I was almost hoping to hear the soft flutter of frail black wings announcing his presence. The voice of Old Major snapped me from my thoughts. I listened intently as he spoke of this idea. We the animals, rule ourselves? I had never heard of a more wondrous proposition. I was set on making this work. Nothing could stop me from achieving this goal that was just within our reach, if only we could all work together. All we needed was to chase that drunken Jones out… We would prevail and take the rights every being deserves and desires. This contemplation lead to the finding of a mantra that I would remember forever, courage and determination go hand in hand.
